The Science Exchange Program (SEP) is an offer where pupils interested in scientific and/or technical topics and who are currently in their 10th or 11th grade at the high school can deal with socially highly relevant topics in this field together with young people from another cultural area. At the same time, they can get to know the everyday life of the other culture through a trip.
The Science Exchange Program 2017 already started with preliminary talks in November 2016 between the Schülerakademie, JingYe High School in Shanghai, and the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (ZML) at KIT on contents and framework conditions of the SEP. Starting in December, the Karlsruhe participants promoted the program in municipal schools.
At an information evening in February 2017, 30 young people and their parents came to KIT to get more information about the possibilities to participate in the program. Afterwards, the 29 interested young people had to submit an application with a letter of motivation and a curriculum vitae, since only 18 places were available.
After the selection process, the young people got to know each other at a first project meeting at the end of March, learned more about the thematic focuses and received important tools for the further course of the programme through a workshop on bridge building, which also served to reflect on work and organisational techniques, as well as through an initial intercultural communication training with the expert Dr. Langsdorf.
The second project meeting was scheduled for the end of May:
The project topics and workshops from the subject areas cryptography, molecular biology, food chemistry, hydraulic engineering, geodesy, geophysics and an intercultural topic area were presented. It was now the task of the young people to choose their topic, prepare it and discuss it with the respective laboratory managers. The aim was to present the respective topic at the next meeting. Each topic group met twice with the accompanying scientist in the laboratory. The working group "Museum Education" at the Landesmuseum "Schloss Karlsruhe" also offered a cultural workshop.
On the second day of the workshop, the pupils presented the keynote speeches on regional studies topics. The topics ranged from everyday life topics such as school or religious beliefs to historical aspects such as the Cultural Revolution or China's economic development. The focus was set by the young people themselves. They discussed their results with Mrs Langsdorf. After a presentation of various communication instruments, also taking into account the conditions in China, the young people decided to use WeChat. This time the homework was to prepare a motivational text of about half a page to present the project to the Chinese students and to prepare a self introduction for the upcoming project meeting.
At the third project meeting at the end of June 2017, the theme groups presented their project status to each other and then discussed the methodological approaches to finding solutions for communicating the project to Chinese young people. The participants then set up a supporting programme for the visit of the Chinese pupils.
The Chinese young people were guests in Karlsruhe from July 7 to 13. After two family days at the beginning, during which the guests could get to know their hosts and their family and friends, they went to the Technoseum in Mannheim on July 9th. In the chain reaction workshop there, the pupils and their guests were able to learn about technology in a playful way. The day ended with a visit to Heidelberg's old town.
On July 10, Prof. Lanza officially welcomed the participants at the KIT and emphasized the importance of intercultural aspects for the working world of the future. Ms. Xia from the Association of Chinese Students and Scientists complemented the event with a keynote speech on training, studies, and life in Germany.
Over the next four days, the German and Chinese pupils then devoted themselves to their projects in the laboratories and institutions. They worked at the Institute of Applied Biosciences with its departments of Food Chemistry and Applied Biology, at the Geodetic Institute, at the Institute of Geophysics, at the Institute of Water and Watercourse Development and at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science. But also in cultural institutions in Karlsruhe such as the Badisches Landesmuseum. On July 13th a big farewell party with family, friends and project partners including a presentation of the results took place.
From October 8 to 22, the return visit of the German pupils to China took place. During the two-week trip they visited Shanghai and Beijing, among other places. In the water village Xitang, for example, they learned about traditional Chinese building methods and visited the West Lake near Shanghai and the gardens of the city of Hangzhou.
During this time, all German young people were also accommodated with their partners from Jing Ye High School, whose daily routine they were also able to experience. They learned more about traditional Chinese medicine and the Beijing Opera and took part in a tea ceremony. After 1 ½ weeks, the German youngsters said goodbye to their Chinese partners and after a night train ride in Beijing, they went to explore the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China at the end of their stay in China.
